Promising blueberry season starts early

Blueberries have ripened unusually early this year due to a warm spring and summer heatwaves. Large parts of Sweden have good conditions for a plentiful harvest.

A warm spring and summer heatwaves have caused the blueberry season to start earlier than normal. In southern Sweden the berries have already been ripe for a while and they are now visible further north, according to Ola Langvall, forest researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

"It is starting to be time to go out and pick", says Langvall. Favourable weather the previous summer gives more buds and good prospects for a good year, and he has not received reports of problems with grazing wildlife or frost nights.

Blueberries are low in calories, rich in vitamins and fibre. According to Mai-Lis Hellénius, professor at Karolinska Institutet, they are good for the gut flora, have an anti-inflammatory effect and positively affect the immune system.
