Mercedes uses throttle lift trick for qualifying edge

Mercedes drivers lifted off the throttle just before the finish line during qualifying at the British Grand Prix weekend to gain an advantage through a legal interpretation of power unit rules.

Both Mercedes drivers adopted the unusual tactic of lifting off the accelerator a few metres before crossing the timing line. This allowed the MGU-K to shut off power instantaneously rather than following the standard reduction ramp.

Kimi Antonelli described the approach after qualifying. "It wasn't easy," he said. "In Q3 I also had to lift off, and with these power units it's always a bit complicated because sometimes you have to drive in a way that doesn't feel completely natural."

The method exploits regulations that permit faster power reduction when the driver is fully off the throttle. Mercedes programmed the electronic control unit to maintain maximum MGU-K output until the lift, conserving energy for the final straight at Silverstone.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella noted surprise at the tactic during sprint qualifying. "When we first noticed it yesterday in sprint qualifying, as Antonelli was doing it, it caught us a little by surprise because it's not something we'd discussed," he said.

Lando Norris hailed recent F1 technical regulation changes as a step forward after winning the Miami sprint race, but noted drivers remain penalized for pushing harder in key areas. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc urged realistic expectations on further improvements. The tweaks, aimed at energy management issues, were first tested at the Miami Grand Prix.

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri explained that new Formula 1 rules require drivers to analyze non-obvious data points to optimize qualifying laps. He highlighted the challenges of managing throttle, battery, and power unit behavior differently than before. Piastri hopes upcoming tweaks for the Miami Grand Prix will ease these issues.

The FIA, teams, and Formula 1 have agreed on tweaks to energy management rules ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, aiming to improve qualifying performance and safety. The changes, finalized on Monday, increase super clipping limits and reduce harvesting caps following concerns raised after Oliver Bearman's crash in Suzuka. FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis described the adjustments as an evolution rather than a revolution.

Lewis Hamilton finished third in the British Grand Prix after struggling with understeer caused by a pre-race front wing adjustment. His Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc won the race. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli took victory in the earlier sprint.

Charles Leclerc has made his first major change to the steering wheel software since joining Ferrari in 2019. The update was introduced with the new 2026 regulations and played a role in his British Grand Prix victory last weekend. The revised layout includes new indicators for the MGU-K and turbo status.
