Stricter language requirements in elderly care from July 1

The government introduces a target with extended language requirements in elderly care. From Wednesday July 1 the Social Services Act is tightened so all staff should aim for Swedish skills equivalent to high school level B2.

All operations in elderly care should strive for employees to have Swedish knowledge equivalent to level B2. This aims to ensure staff can perform their work independently and provide good and safe care.

Uppsala Municipality has worked with language-developing workplaces for several years. The municipality conducts language tests and offers training, digital tools and has 170 employees who act as language supporters.

– We do language tests and have many initiatives to give the right support to the right employee, says Rasmus Sundström, head of department for the elderly care run by Uppsala Municipality in its own operations.
