eBay bans unauthorized AI shopping agents in user agreement update

eBay has updated its User Agreement to prohibit third-party AI agents and chatbots from making purchases on its platform without permission. The policy, effective February 20, 2026, addresses the growing trend of 'agentic commerce' tools that automate shopping. This move allows eBay to pursue legal action against violators while leaving room for its own AI developments.

On Tuesday, eBay revised its User Agreement to explicitly ban third-party “buy for me” agents, LLM-driven bots, and any end-to-end flows that place orders without human review, unless authorized by the company. The change, first noted by Value Added Resource, takes effect on February 20, 2026, and builds on a general prior prohibition against robots, spiders, scrapers, and automated data tools—but now names AI agents specifically.

This policy shift reflects the rapid rise of agentic commerce, where AI tools browse, compare, and buy products for users. OpenAI introduced shopping features to ChatGPT Search in April 2025 and launched Instant Checkout in September 2025 for Etsy and Shopify merchants. eBay CEO Jamie Iannone indicated in November 2025 that the company might join OpenAI’s program. Other examples include Perplexity’s “Buy with Pro” one-click checkout, Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol for AI-retailer interactions, and Amazon’s “Buy For Me” feature for external purchases within its app.

eBay had already adjusted its robots.txt file in December 2025, adding a “Robot & Agent Policy” that blocked automated scraping and buy-for-me agents, specifically targeting bots from Perplexity, Anthropic, Amazon, and others while permitting Google’s shopping bot. However, robots.txt relies on voluntary compliance; embedding the rules in the User Agreement enables eBay to enforce them legally.

Despite the restrictions, eBay is not closing off AI entirely. Iannone stated on an October 2025 earnings call that the company is “testing a variety of agentic experiences in search and shopping.” The policy permits such bots with eBay’s prior express permission, potentially fostering partnerships like with OpenAI.

Bandcamp has prohibited music generated wholly or substantially by AI on its platform, aiming to safeguard the human element in music creation. The policy, announced on January 14, 2026, allows users to flag suspected AI content for review and removal. This move contrasts with other streaming services grappling with an influx of AI-produced tracks.

In 2025, AI agents became central to artificial intelligence progress, enabling systems to use tools and act autonomously. From theory to everyday applications, they transformed human interactions with large language models. Yet, they also brought challenges like security risks and regulatory gaps.

As AI platforms shift toward ad-based monetization, researchers warn that the technology could shape users' behavior, beliefs, and choices in unseen ways. This marks a turnabout for OpenAI, whose CEO Sam Altman once deemed the mix of ads and AI 'unsettling' but now assures that ads in AI apps can maintain trust.

A new research paper argues that AI agents are mathematically destined to fail, challenging the hype from big tech companies. While the industry remains optimistic, the study suggests full automation by generative AI may never happen. Published in early 2026, it casts doubt on promises for transformative AI in daily life.

Humanoid robots capable of household chores and industrial work are nearing widespread availability, driven by American innovators like Tesla and Agility Robotics. These machines, resembling humans in form and function, promise to handle mundane jobs from folding laundry to flipping burgers. Experts predict their integration into daily life as a natural step in automation.

Yahoo has unveiled Scout, a new generative AI 'answer engine' for its search platform, now available in beta. Powered by Anthropic's Claude model, it aims to provide synthesized responses to natural-language queries. The tool is part of a broader intelligence platform integrating AI across Yahoo's services.

OpenAI reported a dramatic increase in child exploitation incidents to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children during the first half of 2025, sending 80 times more reports than in the same period of 2024. The company attributed the rise to expanded moderation capabilities, new features allowing image uploads, and rapid user growth. This spike reflects broader concerns about child safety in generative AI platforms.
