Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the final entry in its remake trilogy, during the closing slot of the Summer Game Fest showcase. Director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the project's development in a follow-up interview at the company's Los Angeles offices.
The game is scheduled for release in spring 2027, three years after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Hamaguchi said the shorter gap resulted from skipping planned DLC for Rebirth to redirect all resources toward completing the trilogy.
Revelation will retain the open-world format introduced in Rebirth while adding a new parachute mechanic for the Highwind airship. Hamaguchi noted the system draws from battle royale games to allow party members to drop into locations without requiring multiple landing zones.
Combat will include Vincent and Cid as playable characters. Each will vary existing roles rather than introduce new ones, with Cid focusing on aerial attacks similar to Red XIII on the ground. A new FITS job system will let players assign roles such as black mage while preserving each character's core abilities.
Hamaguchi confirmed the trilogy's conclusion was not altered by feedback on Rebirth's ending. He added that the trilogy format could apply to other classic Final Fantasy titles like FF6 or FF9 because their original stories contain too much content for a single modern game.
