A journalist who was initially skeptical of Halo: Campaign Evolved changed their view after playing two levels of the game. The demo followed a showcase by Microsoft on Sunday.
The playtest covered the levels The Silent Cartographer and Assault on the Control Room. The reviewer noted strong visuals in Unreal Engine 5 along with familiar sound design and enemy AI behaviors that matched earlier Halo titles. Changes from the original include faster reload speeds, regenerating health and shields, fall damage, four-player co-op and the ability to sprint. The journalist also drove a Wraith and used an Energy Sword in ways not possible in the first game. Some elements drew criticism including peppy voice acting and added floor markers for guidance. The writer concluded that the game captures the essence of Halo while updating it for modern play.
