Bar do Biu, located on Rua Cardeal Arcoverde in Pinheiros, São Paulo, will close due to the sale of the property to a construction company.
The closure of the establishment was motivated by negotiations between the property owner and a construction company, without the involvement of the bar's operators. The venue, known for dishes such as baião de dois, operates on the main artery of Pinheiros.
The sale will allow construction of another residential tower in the area, following Master Plan requirements for active ground-floor facades. These rules favor chains and franchises over traditional businesses.
Columnist Marcos Nogueira describes the case as a summary execution worsened by gentrification, which eliminates family-run botecos in upscale parts of the city.
