اختبرت شركتان ضخ مياه البحر فوق جليد القطب الشمالي لزيادة سماكته وإبطاء ذوبانه في الصيف. أسفرت التجارب الميدانية في كندا والنرويج عن جليد أكثر سماكة، لكنها أظهرت تأثيرات متفاوتة على مدة بقائه.

أجرى باحثون من شركة Arctic Reflections الهولندية تجربة في أبريل 2024 في إحدى بحيرات سفالبارد. وقاموا بضخ مياه البحر فوق الجليد لنحو ساعة، مما أدى إلى زيادة سماكته من 90 سنتيمتراً إلى 1.16 متر. بدأ الجليد المكتسي سماكة إضافية في التحلل في وقت متأخر عن الجليد غير المعالج، لكنه ذاب تماماً في نفس يوم ذوبان الجليد في موقع المراقبة.
