Moderates propose easier conversion of rental homes

The Moderates presented a proposal at Järvaveckan to give tenants greater opportunity to buy their municipal homes.

Aid and foreign trade minister Benjamin Dousa (M) described the proposal as ”an own-home movement for the suburbs” during his speech in Spånga in northwest Stockholm.

– Suburban residents who today live in municipal public housing should have an expanded opportunity to buy their home. We want to give more people the chance to own their housing, feel responsibility, freedom and security, says Dousa.

The proposal, called ”right to buy”, means that at least two-thirds of tenants can vote to purchase the property. Municipal landlords would then be forced to sell, unlike today’s requirement for landlord approval.
