NPSC settles over 1,200 police injury compensation claims

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has revealed that over 1,272 compensation claims by police officers injured in the line of duty have been settled. This disclosure was made before the Senate Committee on National Security. Separately, the Ministry of Interior announced salary increases for police officers.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has revealed that 1,272 compensation claims by police officers injured in the line of duty have been settled. According to the commission, as of February 28, a total of 1,954 claims relating to the 2021/2022 financial year had been lodged with the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Some 393 claims remain pending, including 276 from the Kenya Police Service, 94 from the Administration Police Service, and 23 from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Another 289 claims have been declined.

The confirmation was provided by NPSC Chief Executive Officer Peter Leley, accompanied by Chairperson Amani Yuda Komora, during their appearance before the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Chairperson Komora explained that the pending claims stem from delays in submitting complete documentation by officers or their dependents, as well as the need for a second medical opinion before processing. “The persistent challenge in the administration of the compensation scheme has been the insurer’s practice of unilaterally referring injured officers for a second medical examination,” Amani stated.

“These re-evaluations are typically conducted by a single doctor appointed by the insurer and have frequently resulted in significantly reduced compensation awards compared to the original assessments made by the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services,” he added.

The Senate committee emphasized the need for prompt settlement of claims to address the welfare of injured police officers.

This comes a day after the Ministry of Interior announced salary increases for lower-rank police officers across the security sector, effective from July this year. Under the new structure, a constable in the lowest cadre of the National Police Service will earn a maximum basic salary of Ksh57,700, up from Ksh38,975. The highest-ranking officer will now receive Ksh345,850, up from Ksh289,090.
