أكد علماء أن أخطبوطاً أزرق بحجم كرة الغولف هو نوع غير معروف سابقاً، وذلك بعد فحص عينة تم جمعها من أعماق المياه قبالة جزر غالاباغوس.

تمت ملاحظة هذا الكائن، الذي أطلق عليه اسم Microeledone galapagensis، لأول مرة في عام 2015 خلال بعثة استكشافية في أعماق البحار على متن السفينة E/V Nautilus بالقرب من جزيرة داروين. واستخدم باحثون من مؤسسة تشارلز داروين ومديرية حديقة غالاباغوس الوطنية مركبة تعمل عن بعد لرصد الكائن على عمق حوالي 5800 قدم. وقد جمع الباحثون عينة واحدة وسجلوا مقاطع فيديو لاثنين آخرين من نفس النوع.
