Cheaper gasoline raises cost of public charging for EV owners

A temporary tax cut on gasoline and diesel introduced on July 1 makes it cheaper in some cases to run on fossil fuels than to charge an electric car at public stations.

The government lowered the tax by three kronor per liter. A TT calculation shows a gasoline car now costs nine kronor per mile while an electric car fast-charging publicly costs 10.80 kronor per mile.

People refueling and charging in Östersund react to the difference. Jimmy Axelsson who drives diesel says it is not so good really. Christian Holgersson who charges his electric car notes that fast charging publicly is expensive while it is almost free at home.

The comparison applies only to public chargers. Many electric vehicle owners still charge more cheaply at home.
