China targets 100,000 fuel cell vehicles by 2030

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other agencies issued a joint circular aiming for 100,000 fuel cell vehicles nationwide by 2030, double the 2025 level. End-user hydrogen prices are targeted to fall below 25 yuan (about $3.62) per kg by then, and around 15 yuan in advantaged regions.

On March 17, 2026, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and two other departments issued a circular on piloting comprehensive hydrogen energy applications. It sets a target of 100,000 fuel cell vehicles nationwide by 2030, double the level at the end of 2025. End-user hydrogen prices should drop below 25 yuan (about $3.62 U.S. dollars) per kg by 2030, and around 15 yuan in advantaged regions, while fostering hydrogen as a new driver of economic growth. The MIIT noted that China's hydrogen industry has progressed from 'zero to one' but faces challenges like limited scenarios, high costs, and storage/transport issues. Pilots prioritize fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen-powered industry, and innovative uses, with city clusters as main participants. The central government offers reward funds for four-year pilots, capping at 1.6 billion yuan per cluster. By end-2025, nearly 40,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were sold nationwide, with 574 refueling stations boasting over 360 tonnes daily capacity, placing China among global leaders. Applications include hydrogen public transport, urban logistics, ride-hailing fleets, and blending into natural gas pipelines and industrial boilers. The program calls for renewable hydrogen projects to replace fossil fuel-based production using coal and natural gas. (178 words)

Chinese carmakers sold more than 2.6 million electric vehicles to overseas markets last year, up 104 percent from the previous year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. As the world's leading EV producer, China benefits from low production costs and advanced battery technologies that make its vehicles highly competitive globally. Yet, export growth is now facing a slowdown.

Used batteries from electric vehicles could fulfill two-thirds of China's grid storage requirements by 2050, according to a study by researchers at Tsinghua University. These second-life batteries would charge during periods of abundant renewable energy and release power during peak demand. The approach could reduce costs by 2.5 percent while supporting a shift to carbon-neutral power systems.

As detailed in the initial report on this breakthrough, experts at a Beijing evaluation conference on Tuesday praised the 'off-field electrocatalysis' technology developed by academician Li Can's team at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. They recommended immediate industrial scale-up, following over 1,000 hours of uninterrupted operation at a Xinxiang pilot plant that eliminates nearly 100% of hydrogen sulfide emissions while producing high-value hydrogen and sulfur.

Tesla is redirecting resources away from expanding car model variants in China to bolster investments in artificial intelligence, robotics, and energy systems starting in 2026. Global Vice President Tao Lin announced that the company's capital spending will surpass $20 billion globally, with significant focus on China. This shift positions Tesla as a broader technology firm beyond electric vehicles.

Honda Motor Co. announced on March 12, 2026, the cancellation of three electric vehicles—the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 sedan, and Acura RSX—planned for production at its Ohio EV Hub, due to US policy shifts, tariffs, weak demand, and Chinese competition. The company revised its fiscal 2025 outlook to a net loss of 420-690 billion yen from a prior profit estimate, warning of a ¥2.5 trillion impairment charge.
