Ein leitender Polizeibeamter hat vor der südafrikanischen Madlanga-Untersuchungskommission ausgesagt, dass Kokain im Wert von 55 Millionen Rand aus einem forensischen Labor verschwunden ist, nachdem es 2021 in Johannesburg beschlagnahmt worden war.

Oberst Francois Steyn, Leiter der Abteilung für schwere organisierte Kriminalität der Gauteng Hawks im West Rand, sagte am Montag aus, dass die verschwundenen Drogen Teil einer 715,86 kg schweren Lieferung waren, die am 9. Juli 2021 in Aeroton abgefangen wurde.

Die Sendung wurde von der Polizeistation Booysens zu einer Polizeischule in Pretoria und anschließend zu einem forensischen Labor gebracht. Als Steyn im Dezember 2024 Zugang anforderte, konnte das Personal die vollständige Menge nicht mehr finden. Bis Februar 2025 wog das Kokain nur noch 579,40 kg, womit 136,46 kg verschwunden sind.

Steyn beschrieb den ursprünglichen Tatort als chaotisch. Die Aussage folgt auf Beweise, die der gleichen Kommission vergangene Woche zu einem separaten Kokaindiebstahl im Wert von 200 Millionen Rand aus einem Gebäude der Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal im Jahr 2021 vorgelegt wurden.
