Jubilee presidential aspirant Fred Matiang’i has celebrated the success of his three-day visit to the Gusii region, accompanied by opposition leaders. He used the tour to demonstrate his political base in an area considered an ODM stronghold. He was also sworn in as spokesperson for the Abagusii community by the Council of Abagusii Elders.
Dr. Matiang’i’s tour in the Gusii region, covering Nyamira and Kisii, drew a large crowd and featured highly energetic rallies. It was led by Senators Richard Onyonka of Kisii and Okong’o Omogeni of Nyamira, along with MPs such as Clive Gisairo of Kitutu Masaba, Patrick Osero of Borabu, Anthony Kibagendi of Kitutu Chache South, Innocent Obiri of Bobasi, Obadiah Barongo of Bomachoge Borabu, and Charles Onchoke of Bonchari.
During the visit, several aspirants, including former strong opponents like Ezekiel Machogu, joined him. These aspirants have decided to support Matiang’i in his presidential bid to improve their chances of winning seats in the 2027 elections.
The rallies evoked memories of Simeon Nyachae, the former Ford People leader who ran for president in 2002 and finished third. Nyachae received full community backing, with all 10 MPs elected on his party ticket.
Political analysts state that the tour positions Matiang’i as the main Abagusii leader after Nyachae and bolsters the Jubilee party in the area. “Anyone aspiring to win an elective seat in Gusii 2027 must align with Matiang’i and the Jubilee party,” said analyst Omondi Okumu.
Analyst Dismas Mokua added that Matiang’i is the legal Jubilee presidential candidate for 2027 and plans to be the opposition coalition’s nominee. The visit forms part of a national strategy to secure Abagusii support.
The entourage visited areas like Nyamache, home to Governor Simba Arati, where residents criticized his poor leadership. Opposition leaders accused Arati of blocking their use of the Gusii stadium. Analysts note the key challenge is building a national network to compete with President Ruto.
