Sai Guntaka plans Cobblestone Coffee opening in South Portland

Sai Guntaka, owner of Taj restaurant, is set to open a new 40-seat cafe named Cobblestone Coffee & Company on Gorham Road in South Portland. The spot, previously the first location of Taj, will feature specialty drinks like Irani chai and unique menu items led by chef Adam Williams. Profits from the cafe will support Guntaka's outreach program providing free meals to those in need.

Sai Guntaka, who owns Taj in South Portland and co-founded Silver Street by Taj in the Old Port, announced plans for Cobblestone Coffee & Company. The 40-seat cafe will occupy the space on Gorham Road that served as the original home of Taj restaurant, where Guntaka achieved his first success as a restaurant owner. He noted a local need for a community-run coffee shop in the area, which inspired the project.

The beverage menu will include brewed coffee and espresso-based drinks, with coffee beans sourced from Tandem Coffee Roasters. A highlight is Irani chai, prepared in the Hyderabad style from Guntaka's family heritage, flavored with cardamom, rose petals, and a blend of spices.

Chef Adam Williams, with prior experience at Black Point Inn, Evo, and Dry Dock, will oversee the kitchen. The menu focuses on seasonal sweet treats, savory pastries, and brunch options designed to be distinctive. Examples include Vada Pav sandwiches, cardamom croissants, and dosa crepes, alongside grab-and-go items. The full menu remains in development, with updates expected near the opening.

Woodhull is handling the design and build-out of the space. Guntaka aims to launch Cobblestone by the end of April. Upon opening, all profits will be directed to his outreach program that delivers free meals to people in need.

The announcement appeared on Portland Food Map on March 1, 2026.
