BMW iX3 debuts with Neue Klasse EV platform

BMW has introduced the iX3, the first vehicle on its new Neue Klasse electric platform, featuring advanced powertrain technology and sustainable design. The model promises over 400 miles of range and rapid charging capabilities. Reviews highlight its responsive handling and innovative interior displays.

The BMW iX3 marks the launch of the company's Neue Klasse series, echoing the innovative vehicles from the 1960s but powered by a fully electric sixth-generation eDrive system. This crossover SUV, arriving in US dealerships next summer, uses a cell-to-pack battery design with 108.7-kWh net capacity and 800-volt architecture, incorporating cylindrical cells measuring 46 mm by 95 mm for improved efficiency and recyclability. The iX3 50 xDrive variant delivers 463 hp (345 kW) and 475 lb-ft (645 Nm) from asynchronous front and synchronous rear motors, achieving a sub-five-second 0-62 mph time.

Sustainability features include recycled materials for batteries, plastics, and aluminum, alongside a monomaterial approach to ease end-of-life recycling. Charging supports up to 400 kW DC for 10-80 percent in 21 minutes, with AC up to 15.4 kW taking about 7.75 hours from empty. Bidirectional capabilities enable vehicle-to-load (V2L), vehicle-to-home (V2H), and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functions. Expected EPA range exceeds 400 miles, with real-world tests showing over 350 miles at 3.3 mi/kWh efficiency.

Inside, the iX3 features Panoramic Vision, a seamless display strip at the windshield base, and an angled central infotainment screen powered by Alexa, though reviewers noted the AI's unreliability and the lack of a physical dial. The steering wheel's design drew criticism for its thickness and spoke placement. A new central computer, dubbed the 'heart of joy,' processes dynamics in one millisecond, enhancing stability and mimicking internal combustion engine feel despite the vehicle's 2,300 kg weight.

Driving impressions from tests at Ascari circuit praise the well-calibrated one-pedal mode, quiet ride in efficiency settings, and composed handling up to seven-tenths speed, with strong brakes and minimal understeer. Advanced driver aids include L2 hands-free freeway driving and remote parking via app, but no L3 support. Pricing is anticipated below $60,000, positioning it against rivals like the Audi Q6 e-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQ GLC. BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse stated the Neue Klasse 'is redefining the BMW brand.'
