German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier delivered his annual Christmas address on December 24, reflecting on the essence of the holiday. He imagined how empty life would be without Christmas, celebrating traditions like city lights, ancient songs, and thoughtful gifts. The core message, he said, is: "In the darkness, a light shines."
Steinmeier linked this to personal and societal fears, such as illnesses, losses, or global crises and wars. Hope arises from community, family, and engagement. He praised the Sternsinger children, who collected nearly 50 million euros last time for needy children worldwide, as a symbol of following a guiding star.
The president stressed the need for dialogue and openness to find shared goals. Christmas strengthens relationships and encourages giving and helping. He specifically addressed Ukraine: "Against which Russia has been waging war for almost four years." He urged Europeans to defend values like freedom, human dignity, and democratic self-determination: "We will not give up our democratic self-determination."
Steinmeier appreciated the scouts' motto "A Spark of Courage" for new beginnings. He concluded with Christmas greetings from himself and his wife.
