Developers of an upcoming Donkey Kong 64 PC port have publicly distanced their project from a competing effort that relies on AI tools. The announcement came via a trailer posted on June 28.
The team behind Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled released a trailer on June 28 showing the fan-made PC port built with Wiseguy’s N64 recompilation tool. The project includes widescreen support, high frame rates, 4K options, updated minigames, low input lag, and mod support.
Developers emphasized that the work draws on more than a decade of experience from the Donkey Kong 64 Randomizer mod and does not use AI. One developer, theballaam96, stated on Reddit that the team wanted to announce first because a rival project is “vibe coding their way through, and doing a very poor job of it.”
A Discord post from the team added that the other project’s heavy reliance on AI is leading to “a poor quality project that will make it progressively harder to manage.” As of June 29, the PC Gaming Wiki listed only Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled among DK64 recompilation efforts.
