Hickstead retire le talus irlandais après près de 60 ans

L'All England Jumping Course de Hickstead a retiré son célèbre talus irlandais, un élément emblématique présent depuis près de 60 ans. Les organisateurs ont décrit cette décision comme la fin d'une époque, invoquant les coûts élevés de reconstruction et une utilisation limitée. L'obstacle n'était franchi que lors de deux épreuves annuelles.

La directrice générale de Hickstead, Lizzie Bunn, a annoncé ce retrait le 1er avril, confirmant qu'il ne s'agissait pas d'un poisson d'avril. Le petit talus, distinct du talus du Derby, a été démonté avec soin après consultation du chef de piste Kelvin Bywater. Mme Bunn a souligné qu'il nécessitait une reconstruction complète très coûteuse, alors qu'il n'était franchi que lors du British Speed Derby et de l'Ashby Underwriting Eventers’ Challenge au Royal International Horse Show (RIHS). Ce changement offre aux chefs de piste une plus grande flexibilité, notamment pour créer de nouvelles tracés vers la rivière. Son retrait libère de l'espace pour un obstacle de type "hog’s back" à l'aspect naturel, situé au même endroit pour le Speed Derby, tandis que le reste du parcours demeure inchangé. Introduit en 1969, ce talus d'environ 1,50 mètre avait provoqué une petite rébellion parmi des cavaliers comme David Broome et Harvey Smith, qui avaient refusé de le sauter. Marion Coakes l'avait franchi avec Daddy’s Girl pour remporter les Ireland Stakes. Le fondateur, le regretté Douglas Bunn, avait défendu cet ajout au nom de la diversité, affirmant qu'il suscitait les applaudissements lorsqu'il était bien sauté. Il y a près de trois ans, Harriet Biddick et Silver Lift avaient réussi le triple de planques sans bride après avoir sauté le talus lors d'une tentative de quatrième victoire au Speed Derby. Ella Dalton et Quality Rubies N Diamonds ont remporté l'épreuve en 2023. Mme Bunn a reconnu que certains cavaliers et spectateurs pourraient ressentir de la tristesse, mais elle espère que ce changement encouragera davantage d'inscriptions de chevaux très rapides. Le British Speed Derby est programmé pour l'avant-dernier jour du Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting, du 18 au 21 juin. L'Eventers’ Challenge aura lieu le jeudi du RIHS, du 21 au 26 juillet.

Silver Lift, the Irish-bred gelding who won three Hickstead Speed Derby titles with rider Harriet Biddick, has retired at age 21. The horse, which also finished second four times in the event, will spend its retirement with an old friend and other horses in the field.

The inaugural British Bridleless Competition took place at Merrist Wood on 31 May, featuring showjumping and dressage events without bridles. More than 20 competitors participated, with around 500 spectators in attendance. Organisers described the event as a success that has sparked widespread interest.
