Tesla has released additional official documentation outlining safety features and operational guidelines for its Cybercab Robotaxi. The documents describe vehicle capabilities, emergency procedures, and limitations in various conditions. They confirm the vehicle is designed for SAE Level 4 autonomy in most scenarios.

The documentation specifies that the Cybercab includes an active hood for pedestrian protection, at least 10 airbags, and pressurized air canisters with camera washers. First responders can manually move the vehicle using on-board controls if it is in a dangerous position, and there are two first responder loops for redundancy.

Tesla states the Cybercab operates on all public roadways including freeways and rural roads, as well as private areas like parking lots and charging stations. It can function at all times of day and night and in light to moderate precipitation but does not accept new rides during extreme weather.

The vehicle typically has no steering wheel or pedals and uses SAE Level 4 automation. Test versions may include controls for manual operation at SAE Level 2. Opening a door or unbuckling a seat belt causes the vehicle to disengage and park automatically.

Additional features include exterior microphones for support communication, a centered charge port, and a manual emergency charge cable release. The Cybercab roams its area or heads to charging when idle and pulls over safely if connectivity or hardware issues arise.

Tesla's Cybercab has obtained a Certificate of Conformity from the EPA, clearing a regulatory step for the autonomous robotaxi. The certification confirms compliance with federal and California emissions standards as a zero-emission vehicle. Public documents also disclosed technical details including weight, battery size, and range.

Following the first Cybercab production unit in February, Tesla released a video on April 23 showing multiple steerless robotaxis rolling off the line and driving autonomously to the outbound lot. This footage underscores rapid progress toward volume production amid broader autonomous driving advancements.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began rulemaking on Thursday to update federal motor vehicle safety standards for autonomous vehicles. The changes would remove requirements for manual brake pedals in vehicles designed exclusively for automated driving systems. Tesla's Cybercab stands to benefit from the proposed revisions.
