Mercedes has taken a commanding lead in the 2026 Formula 1 season, securing 1-2 finishes in all four qualifying sessions and winning every race so far, including the China sprint. The team showed superior pace, with advantages of eight tenths in Melbourne and three-and-a-half tenths in Shanghai and Suzuka. Ferrari and McLaren trail as closest challengers, though Ferrari's ADUO engine upgrade could narrow the powertrain gap, according to Marko, who spoke to Austria's ORF broadcaster. Antonelli has impressed by matching experienced teammate Russell in qualifying and claiming two grand prix wins to top the championship. Marko praised the young driver's demeanor as refreshing and highlighted his rapid rise, including junior titles and F1 age records for youngest polesitter, fastest lap, race leader, championship leader, and hat-trick scorer. These surpass marks once held by drivers like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, whom Marko developed. Marko questioned if Antonelli can sustain his form, noting a 2025 slump in Europe where he scored just three points there versus 147 overseas. Still, he expects the title to be settled between the two Mercedes drivers, with Russell's experience as a factor.
