Egypt to launch child SIM card with internet restrictions by June 2026

Egypt's government plans to launch a dedicated child SIM card with secure internet packages and age-based social media restrictions before June 30, 2026. Cabinet Spokesman Mohamed El-Homosany stated the initiative forms part of a governance framework for child online protection. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly directed the swift completion of a draft law on internet child protection.

Cabinet Spokesman Mohamed El-Homosany stated that the child SIM card will feature secure internet packages, parental controls, and age-based social media restrictions. It is part of a proposed governance framework that includes a "fixed internet control" mechanism, developed with telecommunications operators, for content classification and controls on devices supporting multiple networks.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly instructed the Cabinet’s Board of Advisors to quickly finalize the draft law on internet child protection for review by relevant authorities. Madbouly confirmed the government is implementing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives to urgently draft legislation countering digital risks, ensuring a safe online environment, and protecting societal values.

The executive measures cover legislative and regulatory responses to online betting, counterfeit currency distributed via video games, and digital addiction. El-Homosany noted that safeguarding youth from these risks is directly linked to national security. The framework requires digital platforms to activate protection tools such as age verification, parental controls, content classification, periodic reports, complaint mechanisms, and awareness campaigns.

The meeting included Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy, Minister of Education Mohamed Abdel Latif, Minister of Communications Raafat Hindi, and others, along with heads of media and regulatory bodies.
