Indonesian racer Julian Johan succeeds in 2026 Dakar Rally debut

Indonesian racer Julian Johan recorded positive results in his debut at the 2026 Dakar Rally, finishing fifth overall in the Dakar Classic category and first in Iconic Classic. He competed with French navigator Mathieu Monplaisi using a historic Toyota Land Cruiser 100. This achievement exceeded his initial goal of simply completing the 14-day race across extreme desert terrain.

The 2026 Dakar Rally, spanning 14 days over approximately 8,000 kilometers of desert sand and rocky terrain, tested vehicles and drivers to their limits. Julian Johan, an Indonesian racer known as Jeje, made his debut and completed all stages without major issues.

In the Dakar Classic category, Julian finished fifth overall among dozens of international participants and third in Class H.2. He achieved an even stronger result in the Iconic Classic category, taking first place with a Toyota Land Cruiser 100 prepared by the French team Compagnie Sahariene. This vehicle has a history from the early 2000s Paris Dakar era.

"Finishing fifth overall in the Dakar Classic category was actually beyond expectations, as the initial goal was just to reach the finish line," Julian stated in an official release on January 18, 2026. He added, "The terrain was very challenging and unusual for an Indonesian racer, so we tried to be careful every day."

Vehicle consistency was key to his success. Managing Director of PT Motul Indonesia Energy, Welmart Purba, highlighted the importance of high-tech lubricants for extreme conditions. "With a high-tech lubricant formulation designed for extreme conditions, engine performance is expected to remain optimal in high temperatures, heavy pressure, and very long distances," he said.

Julian's achievement is not only a personal milestone but also enriches Indonesia's participation in the world's most demanding rally. He emphasized engine endurance to maintain race rhythm, distinguishing Dakar from other racing events.
