Apple Watchの消費カロリー測定には不正確な場合が多いことが研究で明らかに

Apple Watchなどのスマートウォッチは、心拍数の測定精度は高いものの、消費カロリーを正確に測定することには苦戦していることが最近の研究で示された。

スタンフォード大学医学部が2024年に行った研究では、Apple Watchを含む複数のデバイスを60人のボランティアでテストした。最も精度が高かったトラッカーでも医療用測定値から平均27%の誤差があり、最も精度の低いものでは93%もの誤差が生じていた。

『Journal of Personalized Medicine』に掲載された同研究のシニアオーサーであるユアン・アシュリー医師は、エネルギー消費量の測定値が実際の値から大きく外れていたと述べている。アンナ・シェルビナ助教授は、フィットネスレベルや身長、体重などの要因によってエネルギー消費量が異なるため、アルゴリズムが課題に直面していると指摘した。

『Nature』に掲載された別の研究でも同様の結論に達している。この研究では、複数のセンサーを使用することで誤差が増幅される可能性や、肌の色や皮膚の水分レベルも測定結果に影響を与えることが明らかになった。

スマートウォッチは、モーションセンサー、GPS、心拍数データ、機械学習アルゴリズムを用いて消費カロリーを推定しているが、これらの手法は直接的な代謝測定ではなく、あくまで指標に基づく推計に過ぎない。
