脂肪燃焼を検知する呼気アルコール検知器型のデバイスが開発される

研究チームが、体内のエネルギー源が脂肪に切り替わったことを示す呼気中のアセトンを測定するハンディタイプの呼気検査デバイスを開発した。「Nutrion」と名付けられたこのデバイスは、スイスのチューリッヒ工科大学(ETH Zurich)で開発され、すでに市販されている。

チューリッヒ工科大学のアンドレアス・ギュントナー氏と研究チームは、体重計や血液検査といった既存の手法の限界を克服するためにこのツールを開発した。このデバイスにはアセトン特有のセンサーが搭載されており、湿度や妨害成分を処理するフィルターが組み込まれている。また、スマートフォンのアプリがユーザーの呼吸法をガイドする仕組みとなっている。

さまざまな食事や運動条件のもとで行った12名の被験者によるテストでは、このデバイスの測定値が実験室での呼気アセトンおよび血中ケトン値の測定結果と一致することが確認された。デバイスは、激しい運動後に上昇するアセトン値や、糖分を含む飲料や炭水化物を摂取した直後の急激な低下など、微細な代謝の変化を検知した。

ギュントナー氏は、このツールがダイエットや断続的な断食、ケトジェニックダイエットの助けになる可能性があると述べている。現在、子供のてんかん治療のモニタリングにおける有効性を評価する試験が進行中であり、同分野では現在、繰り返し行う血液検査が標準となっている。

Elevate Performance Testingのダーク・ダグデール=デュウェル氏は、このアプローチが、リアルタイムの代謝データに基づいて炭水化物の摂取量を調整したいと考えている患者やアスリートにとって、家庭でのモニタリングを容易にする可能性があると評価している。
