古代マヤおよびアンデス文明を紹介する「トウモロコシ・黄金・ジャガー」展が日曜日、北京の首都博物館で開幕し、約800点の遺物が展示されている。
本展にはメキシコとペルーの20以上の文化遺産機関から収集された遺物が展示されている。展示数および国際協力の規模において、同館史上最大規模の企画展となる。
展示は「マヤの世界」「王の至宝」「自然の精霊」という3つの主要セクションで構成されている。マヤのセクションでは、展示されるメキシコの遺物の9割が北京初公開となる。また「王の至宝」セクションでは、ペルーのシパン王の墓から出土した品々が注目されており、その8割がペルー国外では初公開となる貴重な資料である。
開幕式に出席したカルロス・バスケス駐中ペルー大使は、本展は二つの古代文明の再会を象徴するものであり、現代のペルーを知るきっかけにもなると語った。
会場は1万平方メートルの広さを持ち、5,000平方メートルの展示スペースと、同規模の没入型体験エリアで構成されている。会場では古代中国文明もマヤ・アンデス文化と並んで展示され、時空を超えた対話を試みている。
