アマテラス粒子は、2021年にユタ州のテレスコープアレイによって約240エクサ電子ボルトのエネルギーで検出された。その飛来方向は宇宙の空洞(ボイド)を指しており、起源は不明のままとなっていた。研究者らが異なる粒子が銀河間空間をどのように移動するかをモデル化したところ、鉄よりも重い原子核は陽子よりもエネルギーの損失が遅いことが判明した。ペンシルベニア州立大学の主任研究員である村瀬孔太氏は「我々の研究により、アマテラス粒子に匹敵するエネルギーにおいて、超重原子核は陽子や中間質量の原子核よりもエネルギーをゆっくりと失うことが示された」と述べている。考えられる発生源としては、巨大な恒星がブラックホールへ崩壊する現象や、中性子星同士の合体が挙げられる。今後、新たな観測施設によって宇宙線データからこれらの超重粒子の痕跡が検証される可能性がある。
