Mercedes struggles to resolve Russell energy deployment issues

Mercedes remains unable to fully explain George Russell's energy deployment problems after the Belgian Grand Prix. The issues persisted despite adjustments to his driving style following similar difficulties at Silverstone. Team deputy technical director Simone Resta confirmed ongoing analysis ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell reported a clear top speed deficit compared to teammate Kimi Antonelli during practice and qualifying at Spa. He placed fourth on the grid while Antonelli took pole position.

"My whole focus for the last 36 hours has been on straight-line speed," Russell said after qualifying. "We don't know what's going on. I don't think it's the power unit, to be honest."

Resta stated that the team identified driving style differences as a major contributor but noted that changes did not eliminate the gap. He added that Mercedes is working under new regulations and is still learning after ten races.

Both Mercedes cars suffered from a software glitch that limited energy harvest out of Turn 1. This caused a boost issue into Turn 5 and contributed to Russell's first-lap retirement after contact with Lewis Hamilton.
