Chinese group SAIC Motor has announced its first manufacturing plant in Europe, to be located in Ferrol and As Pontes with a 200 million euro investment.

The Xunta de Galicia confirmed the project on June 1, 2026. The facility will have capacity to assemble up to 120,000 vehicles per year from 2028 and will create 1,000 direct jobs in Ferrol, more than 1,000 indirect jobs and 300 additional positions in As Pontes.

Construction will begin in 2027. The plant will start with final assembly of vehicles shipped from China and progress toward full production processes.

The Galician government has declared the initiative a strategic industrial project. Councilor María Jesús Lorenzana noted that the project aims to turn the area into an industrial hub similar to Stellantis in Vigo.
