Bungie plans Marathon patches to nerf knife and other combat elements

Bungie game director Joseph Ziegler announced upcoming balance patches for Marathon to address combat issues identified through observations and player feedback. Changes target the knife's scaling, bubble shields, thermal scopes, and snipers, with buffs for Vandal and Recon shells. Additional secret updates will introduce new items for solo revives and merciful options between teams.

Joseph Ziegler, game director for Marathon, posted on X that Bungie is preparing adjustments in the next couple of patches. “We’re looking to make some changes in the next couple of patches to adjust some of the outliers in the combat space that we’ve both seen in our observations and heard from your feedback across all of the various (and plentiful) channels we watch,” Ziegler wrote. Some changes will arrive in the next patch, with others a week later. He listed the knife scaling too easily to god-like power levels as one target, alongside bubble shields being too easy to obtain and powerful, thermal scopes too dominant, and snipers too strong in all scenarios. Bungie also plans to boost Vandal and Recon shells to better match their counterparts. Bubble shields have halted fights due to their long duration, forcing close-range combat and grenade use, particularly on maps like Cryo Archive. The knife has enabled quick takedowns of high-shield players, sparking debate. Players have mixed reactions: one argued, “In no world should you be able to kill an entire team in 6 seconds with 6 knife melees,” while another countered that it balances shotguns and strong shields. Ziegler teased secret changes, including a new item for downed solos as an alternative to slow self-revives and another for merciful options between crews. “There'll be a lot more goodies in the coming patches,” he added.
