Quênia corre risco de não pagar dívida externa de 3,32 trilhões de xelins, alerta controladora do orçamento

A controladora do orçamento, Margaret Nyakang’o, alertou que o Quênia corre o risco de entrar em default em 3,32 trilhões de xelins em dívida externa com vencimento dentro de um ano, caso não sejam tomadas medidas urgentes. "Um grande montante de pagamento da dívida aumenta os riscos financeiros e a pressão de curto prazo", disse a Dra. Nyakang’o. Ela acrescentou que a dependência de empréstimos de curto prazo expõe o governo a riscos recorrentes de refinanciamento.

O governo atrasou pagamentos de 53,6 bilhões de xelins em garantias, levantando dúvidas sobre sua capacidade de pagamento. A depreciação do xelim queniano frente às principais moedas também elevou os custos do serviço da dívida externa.

O relatório da Auditora Geral Nancy Gathungu mostra que o governo pagou 6,6 bilhões de xelins em taxas de compromisso de empréstimos não utilizados de 2020/21 a 2023/24. Isso prejudicou serviços essenciais e projetos de desenvolvimento.
