Anthropic faces class action lawsuit over Claude usage limits

A subscriber has filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Anthropic, alleging the company misled customers about usage limits on its premium Claude Max subscription plans. The suit claims actual limits fall short of advertised amounts for the Max 5x and Max 20x tiers.

Karl Khan filed the lawsuit in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. He alleges that the Max 5x plan, priced at $100 per month, delivers only three-and-a-half times the usage of the Pro tier instead of the promised five times. The Max 20x plan at $200 per month provides just six to eight times the Pro usage rather than 20 times, according to the complaint.

Khan upgraded to the Max 20x plan in April 2026 after starting with lower tiers. He reported using nearly 20 percent of his weekly allocation in a single five-hour coding session. The suit seeks class action status for all US consumers who purchased Max plans since April 2025, with damages exceeding $5 million.

Anthropic declined to comment on the filing. The complaint states that the company's website lacks clear details on how usage is calculated or what defines a single session.
