Taste atlas 2026: Italy leads ranking of best cuisines

The travel guide Taste Atlas has released its annual ranking of the most popular national cuisines and dishes for 2026. Based on online ratings from over 11,000 dishes, Italy takes first place with 4.64 stars, followed by Greece with 4.6 stars and Peru with 4.54 stars as a newcomer in the top 10. The list highlights traditional specialties and restaurants that food enthusiasts should visit on trips.

Taste Atlas, a gastronomic travel guide, annually ranks global cuisines and dishes based on user reviews. For 2026, Italy leads the list of best national cuisines with 4.64 out of five stars. The Unesco declared Italian culinary arts world heritage last year. Famous dishes include Neapolitan pizza with a thin base and airy rim, as well as ingredients like Parmigiano Reggiano, white truffle, and pistachios from Bronte. Recommended restaurants are Osteria Madonnetta in Marostica (Veneto), Agriturismo Sapori Di Campagna in Ofena (Abruzzo), Pizzeria Starita a Materdei in Naples, Osteria dell’Enoteca in Florence, and Alle Codole in Canale d’Agordo (Dolomites).

Greece ranks second with 4.6 stars. Highlights include souvlaki, mezedes, bifteki, kontosouvli (spit-roasted pork), fava split peas from Santorini, and olive oil. Top tavernas: To Antikristo and Peskesi on Crete, Taverna Vasilas Vasileios and Taverna Zérzoba on the Peloponnese, and Taverna Ninos on Corfu.

Peru enters newly at third place with 4.54 stars. Typical items are aji criollo (spicy salsa), parmesan-baked scallops, and chocotejas pralines. In Lima recommended: La Mar Cebichería, El Bodegon de Miraflores, and Rafael in Miraflores; Isolina Taberna Peruana in Barranco; Astrid y Gaston in San Isidro.

Portugal takes fourth with 4.53 stars, featuring olive oil, Iberico ham, Azores and Barrosã beef, and Pastéis de Belém. Key addresses: Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon, Restaurante Casal da Penha in Funchal (Madeira), Os Três Pipos in Tonda, Solar do Forcado in Portalegre, and Zé Manel dos Ossos in Coimbra.

Spain is fifth, with Iberico ham, paprika powder, Calanda peaches, Galician scallops, and tapas. Best restaurants: Txepetxa and Bar Sport in San Sebastián, Casa Mortero in Madrid, Del Oso in Areños, and Las Termas in Astorga (León).

The top 10 include Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Turkey, China, France, and Indonesia; Peru is noted as a top-10 newcomer. Germany places 27th with 4.27 stars, featuring onion roast beef, Düsseldorfer Mostert mustard, and quark balls.

Among dishes, Vori-vori from Paraguay leads (4.64 stars), a 16th-century corn dumpling soup from Guarani tradition, followed by Neapolitan pizza (4.58 stars) at L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Naples, Tajarin al Tartufo bianco d’Alba in Alba (Italy), Sate Kambing from Indonesia, and Cağ Kebabı from Turkey. The full top 10: Vori-vori (Paraguay), Neapolitan Pizza (Italy), Tajarin al Tartufo bianco d’Alba (Italy), Sate Kambing (Indonesia), Cağ Kebabı (Turkey), Kontosouvli (Greece), Arroz tapado (Peru), Komplet lepinja (Serbia), Quesabirria (Mexico), Pappardelle al cinghiale (Italy). No German main dish made the top 100, only quark balls among desserts.
