Toys for Bob buys independence to revive Spyro series

Toys for Bob has purchased its independence from Microsoft after years under Activision Blizzard ownership. The move allows the studio to focus on projects like the newly announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond.

Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan said the team used the Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard as a chance to regain creative control. The studio left Activision in 2024 after buying itself out to escape corporate mandates that required work on titles such as Warzone, Modern Warfare, and Overwatch 2.

Yan stated the goal was to “get back to the games we were known for, and also to preserve the tight-knit team.” Toys for Bob previously developed Skylanders, recent Crash Bandicoot games, and Spyro the Dragon titles.

The independence has led to the announcement of Spyro: A Realm Beyond, marking a return to the studio’s platformer roots.
