Sony executives detailed new uses for generative AI during the company's earnings call on May 8. PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino described tools that speed up animation and personalization on the platform. The remarks came alongside forecasts of lower PS5 sales due to memory shortages.
Nishino highlighted the Mockingbird tool, which generates 3D facial animations from performance capture data in seconds rather than hours. He said the technology has already been applied in titles including Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and by studios such as Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio. Nishino also noted AI systems for animating hair and creating dynamic NPCs, as seen in Gran Turismo racing agents.
