Helen Benedict, deren Sachbuch 'The Lonely Soldier' aus dem Jahr 2009 den sexuellen Missbrauch aufdeckte, dem Soldatinnen im Irak von 2003 bis 2006 ausgesetzt waren, hat sich der Belletristik zugewandt, um die inneren Geschichten festzuhalten, die in Interviews unausgesprochen blieben. 'Fast alle der vielen Frauen, die ich interviewt habe... wurden von ihren eigenen Kameraden unerbittlich sexuell belästigt oder angegriffen', so Benedict. Sie merkte an, wie Schweigen, Tränen und Witze während dieser Gespräche ihren erzählerischen Ansatz inspirierten. Ihre Arbeit beeinflusste den Dokumentarfilm 'The Invisible War' aus dem Jahr 2012.
