Indonesian police deactivate Sleman chief over mugging case controversy

Indonesia's National Police have temporarily deactivated Sleman Police Chief Kombes Pol Edy Setyanto to ensure objectivity in ongoing investigations into a controversial mugging case. The move follows an audit by the Yogyakarta Regional Police recommending action due to public uproar over the handling of the incident.

Indonesia's National Police announced the temporary deactivation of Sleman Police Chief Kombes Pol Edy Setyanto on Friday (January 30, 2026), following controversy in handling a mugging case where the victim became the suspect. The decision stems from recommendations in an Audit with Specific Purpose (ADTT) conducted by the Regional Supervisory Inspectorate (Itwasda) of the Yogyakarta Regional Police on January 26, 2026.

The case originated on April 26, 2025, when Hogi Minaya pursued two muggers who stole his wife's bag using his car. The chase ended in a traffic accident, with the perpetrators' motorcycle swerving and crashing into a wall, killing two people. Minaya was then designated a suspect by Sleman Police and charged under Article 310 paragraph 4 and Article 311 of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation.

The audit identified weaknesses in leadership oversight, leading to public disturbance from the investigation process and damage to the police's image. "This temporary deactivation is solely to ensure objectivity in the ongoing examination and to guarantee that law enforcement proceeds professionally, transparently, and justly," stated Karopenmas Divhumas Polri Brigjen Pol Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko.

Preliminary ADTT results were reviewed on January 30, 2026, with participants agreeing on the deactivation until the investigation concludes. In follow-up, the Yogyakarta Regional Police will hold a handover ceremony on Friday at 10:00 WIB in the Regional Police Chief's meeting room. Additionally, the Sleman District Attorney's Office has facilitated restorative justice between Minaya and the muggers' families.
