Think tank says Europe blames China economic rise for its failures

A Chinese think tank expert said Europe is blaming its own problems on China's normal development.

Guo Mingxu, head of the Europe Economic Project at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, wrote on social media on Wednesday that narratives such as “China’s industrial upgrading equals a threat” and “China’s export growth equals a hidden danger” have proliferated in Brussels, as if China’s normal development itself were an offence.

China’s foreign ministry said on Thursday that the two sides remained in “communications on the relevant dialogue”. EU sources told the South China Morning Post that the two meetings, including a visit by Olof Skoog, deputy secretary general of the European External Action Service, had been postponed but this was not a retaliatory move by Beijing.

The remarks come as Beijing reportedly cancelled two meetings with the EU this month while the bloc prepares for key talks on China policy.
