On Friday, October 31, 2025, Rhode Island leaders revealed that Bryant University in Smithfield has been selected for FIFA's 2026 World Cup base camp brochure, making it the sole potential site in New England. The announcement highlights the university's modern facilities as a draw for national teams training ahead of matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, scheduled to host seven tournament games.
Bryant University's inclusion stems from multiple scouting visits by FIFA officials, who evaluated the campus against strict standards including level grass pitches with specific blade heights, adequate lighting, ample security, and extensive training facilities. The university's recently opened 43,000-square-foot field house, featuring state-of-the-art locker rooms, training rooms, a press box, and easy access to grass soccer fields, played a key role in securing the spot, according to Bill Smith, Bryant's vice president of athletics and recreation.
"These new state-of-the-art locker rooms, training rooms, press box and easy access to our beautiful grass soccer fields played a huge role in FIFA’s decision," Smith said. He added, "I promise that whatever national team is fortunate enough to select us as their team base camp, we are going to bring that same energy and commitment to excellence as them as well."
Bryant President Ross Gittell emphasized the recognition: "FIFA’s recognition of our modern campus facilities underscores both their quality and their broader global appeal."
Governor Dan McKee praised the development as a major opportunity for Rhode Island, noting Bryant's history of hosting events like the New England Patriots training camp and its current role as the temporary home for Rhode Island FC. "Bryant’s inclusion in this brochure, being the only facility in New England, we felt very comfortable and confident that the World Cup will be here in a strong presence," McKee said.
The selection could boost Rhode Island's economy, with estimates projecting $331 million in visitor spending during games at Gillette. In June 2025, the state formed the nonprofit Ocean State 2026 to capitalize on World Cup-related opportunities. Teams playing at Gillette will choose base camps after the official draw on December 5, 2025.
