Tesla releases detailed FSD safety data after Waymo criticism

Tesla has published its most comprehensive safety report on Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software, claiming it results in significantly fewer collisions than the national average. The data comes weeks after Waymo's co-CEO called for greater transparency from autonomous vehicle companies. The report addresses long-standing criticisms of Tesla's previous safety disclosures.

On November 14, 2025, Tesla launched a new section on its website featuring detailed performance data for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised), or FSD, software. The company reports that in North America, FSD users drive about 5 million miles before a major collision and 1.5 million miles before a minor one. This compares to national averages of 699,000 miles per major collision and 229,000 per minor, based on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics as interpreted by Tesla.

Further breakdowns show FSD users traveling 2.9 million miles between major collisions, versus 505,000 miles for all drivers, and 986,000 miles between minor collisions, versus 178,000 miles. Tesla defines major collisions as those deploying airbags or non-reversible pyrotechnic restraints, including incidents where FSD was active within five seconds prior to impact. Minor collisions lack such deployments. The company states this method captures scenarios where drivers disengage the system or it aborts shortly before a crash.

The release follows criticism from Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana at TechCrunch Disrupt last month. She said, “I don’t know who’s on that list, because they’re not telling us what’s happening with their fleets,” regarding companies making roads safer. Mawakana added, “I think there is a responsibility, if you’re going to put vehicles on the road... it is incumbent upon you to be transparent about what’s happening.” Waymo has shared data showing its vehicles are 5 times safer than human drivers overall and 12 times safer regarding pedestrians.

Tesla's prior quarterly reports focused on the less advanced Autopilot system, mainly used on highways, and were criticized for lacking detail on FSD and the ongoing Robotaxi trial in Austin, Texas, which includes safety monitors. The new report promises quarterly updates using a rolling 12-month aggregation, focusing on collision frequency as a proxy for severity, without injury rates due to automated data collection.

Analysts note the data suggests FSD supervision may improve safety, with claims of 1.5 times better performance on city streets globally compared to similar Teslas without FSD, and nearly 2 times better in North America. However, past Tesla reports have been accused of misleading comparisons, prompting skepticism pending further analysis.
