NASAのジェイムズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡が、スーパーアース「55 Cancri e」を観測し、水素を豊富に含む大気の証拠を発見した。地球から41光年の距離にあるこの惑星は、恒星の極めて近くを公転しているため、岩石が溶けるほどの高温の表面を持っている。

研究チームは同望遠鏡を使用して、この惑星が恒星を横切る「食」を5回観測した。この惑星は地球の約1.88倍の半径と8倍の質量を持ち、約0.7日で公転を完了する。データからは、一酸化炭素が豊富に含まれているほか、少量の二酸化炭素と大量の水素が存在することが明らかになった。

「Nature Astronomy」に投稿されたこの研究結果は、惑星の溶融した内部から放出されるガスによって大気が形成されていることを示唆している。観測ごとに見られる差異は、火山活動によるガス放出や一時的な雲が原因である可能性がある。

研究論文では、この結果は酸素分圧が比較的低い内部環境を示しており、還元されたマグマオーシャンからのガス放出と矛盾しないとしている。なお、この惑星は2004年に初めて発見された。
