Bonfire Coffee launches instant coffee options

Bonfire Coffee in Carbondale has introduced two instant coffee products after nearly 15 years in business. The new offerings allow customers to enjoy the cafe's roasts while traveling or camping. Owner Charlie Chacos also announced plans for a new roasting facility.

For nearly 15 years, Bonfire Coffee has served as a community hub on the north side of Main Street in Carbondale, Colorado, known for its event posters, local art, and high-quality beverages. Owner Charlie Chacos emphasized the importance of quality from the start, beginning with an espresso machine, beans from Seattle, and trained baristas. The business evolved by partnering with Defiant Bean in Glenwood Springs, merging in 2013 to combine roasting and cafe operations. In 2017, Bonfire took over roasting entirely.

The cafe offers 15 craft coffee options, including four single-origin roasts and 11 blends. This winter, Bonfire expanded with two instant coffees produced in partnership with Swift Coffee, selected for their quality and small-batch capabilities. Chacos explained, "We have been impressed with the quality of the instant Swift Coffee for a while now. We are attracted by the shelf-stable aspect and the ability to hit different markets."

The initial instant options are Central Scrutinizer, a medium roast blend from Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua with chocolatey flavors and a hint of citrus, and Colombia El Puente, a single-origin medium roast from Huila, Colombia, featuring notes of fig, spices, and chocolate. The latter comes from smallholder producers focused on fair trade and eco-friendly practices. Each package contains six single servings, available at the Main Street location and online at www.bonfirecoffee.com.

Chacos noted the selection process: "We selected our two favorite coffees that worked with the instant production process. Smooth medium roasts translated better than our light roast coffee." He described coffee as "a fascinating product with a blend of science and art that is endlessly enticing," and his preferred brewing method as a single-serve pour-over.

Looking ahead, Bonfire marks its 15th anniversary this year with highlights including the opening day, new cabinets in 2022, a modular patio, and the 2017 roasting takeover. Chacos views the cafe as a "third space," an extension of home and a sanctuary from work. In April, the roastery will relocate to a new facility in west Glenwood Springs, doubling production space with a best-in-class roaster, retail for whole beans and supplies, espresso training, and tastings—no drinks served.
