한국과 미국이 금요일 양자 조선 협력을 강화하기 위한 양해각서(MOU)에 서명했다. 이번 합의는 작년 무역협정에 따른 1,500억 달러 투자 약속의 일환이다.
워싱턴에서 열린 서명식에는 산업통상자원부 박정성 통상교섭본부장과 미국 상무부 국제무역담당 차관 윌리엄 킴이트가 참여했다. 김정관 산업부 장관과 하워드 루트닉 상무장관이 이를 지켜봤다.
MOU에 따라 양국은 한국-미국 조선 파트너십 이니셔티브(KUSPI)를 설립한다. 이 플랫폼은 상업 조선, 인력 개발, 산업 현대화, 해양 제조 투자를 지원한다. 한국-미국 조선 파트너십 센터는 올해 말 워싱턴에 설립될 예정이다.
양측은 미국 해양 산업 기반에 대한 외국인 직접투자 유치, 인력 훈련, 조선소 생산성 향상 프로젝트 등을 추진하기로 했다. 김 장관과 루트닉 장관은 무역협정에 따른 한국의 투자 프로젝트도 논의했다.
김 장관은 수요일 워싱턴 도착 후 관련 법이 6월 발효된 뒤 첫 투자 프로젝트를 발표할 수 있다고 밝혔다.
