CHED extends deadline for GE curriculum position papers to June 15

The Commission on Higher Education will accept submissions on its reframed general education curriculum until June 15 and has already received 256 papers from higher-education institutions. The rollout of the changes has been deferred until 2028.

CHED Office of Programs and Standards Development director Jimmy Catanes announced the receipt of the papers on Wednesday. The postponement to 2028, first disclosed on May 13, gives the inter-agency technical working group more time to review stakeholder comments.

Academe members welcomed the delay. General Education Movement initiator Jonathan Geronimo said it reflects growing resistance to cutting general-education units from 36 to as few as 18. CHED Chairperson Shirley Agrupis noted that the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines seeks a more flexible approach rather than a one-size-fits-all model.

Separately, the commission will review 480 applications for tuition increases. Agrupis said CHED will study data on the petitions after concerns were raised by the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations.

The Commission on Higher Education has postponed the pilot testing of its proposed reframed general education curriculum from 2026 to 2028. The decision follows petitions from teachers, students, and advocacy groups opposing the reduction of GE units from 36 to 18. Officials cited the need for further review of stakeholder comments.

The Consortium of Rectors of State Universities (Cuech) issued a statement opposing a potential 3% fiscal adjustment affecting their funding, warning there is no room for cuts without harming public education quality. Leaders of the 18 public universities highlight risks to professional training, research, and innovation, particularly in regions. The Ministry of Education declined to comment on the statement.
