Experts warn AI may reduce human skills and competence

Swedish experts highlight risks of generative AI for children's learning and adults' decision-making. The government has tasked the Public Health Agency with investigating the effects.

Torkel Klingberg, professor of cognitive neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet, notes that children and young people may no longer see as much point in practicing skills when AI quickly provides answers. He questions why anyone would spend years improving at writing when AI already writes better than 95 percent of the population.

Katri Lindgren, entrepreneur and EdTech advisor, stresses the need to protect people's own competence. She says AI should be a support and not control work without human oversight, and that human meetings are needed to test and develop ideas.

In early July the government assigned the Public Health Agency to compile knowledge on risks of generative AI for children's and young people's mental health. Reports and recommendations are expected in 2027. A report from the Internet Foundation shows that 57 percent of 8–19-year-olds in Sweden have used AI tools.
