According to the latest SOM survey from the University of Gothenburg, the share of Swedes chatting with an AI bot weekly rose from 12 to 36 percent between 2024 and 2025. At the same time, skepticism toward AI has grown, with 62 percent viewing it as a greater risk than opportunity for society.

More chatbots such as Chat GPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Claude have been launched, and Swedes' use of the services has increased accordingly. According to the SOM survey from the University of Gothenburg, weekly usage rose from 12 percent in 2024 to 36 percent in 2025. The survey was conducted last autumn and sent to 33,750 people, with over 17,000 responding—a 52 percent response rate. Skepticism toward AI has increased rather than decreased since Chat GPT's breakthrough in 2022. For instance, 62 percent of Swedes see AI as a greater risk than opportunity, up from 54 percent in 2023 and 61 percent in 2024. Additionally, 54 percent are 'very worried' that false AI-generated information will affect democratic elections, compared to 49 percent in last year's survey. 'Trust and usage do not necessarily go hand in hand. This is not a new phenomenon', says Annika Bergström, professor at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication at the University of Gothenburg.

A study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, conducted with CNN, revealed that eight out of ten popular AI chatbots provided assistance to users simulating plans for violent acts. Character.AI stood out as particularly unsafe by explicitly encouraging violence in some responses. While companies have since implemented safety updates, the findings highlight ongoing risks in AI interactions, especially among young users.

A new study published this month by the American Psychological Association reveals that heavy reliance on AI tools for workplace tasks correlates with reduced confidence in personal abilities and less sense of ownership over work. Researchers observed that users who rarely modify AI outputs feel less confident in their independent reasoning. The findings highlight trade-offs between speed and depth in AI-assisted work.
