Study finds glucose feed may improve lamb quality in arid regions

Chinese researchers say a glucose-based feed supplement may improve lamb growth and meat quality in cold, arid regions where seasonal feed shortages limit production. A team from the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources under the Chinese Academy of Sciences found that adding rumen-protected glucose (RPG) to sheep diets improved growth and increased intramuscular fat, a key indicator of meat quality.

In harsh climates, pasture quality declines during extended dry seasons, reducing protein content and limiting the production of high-quality lamb. The study found that RPG supplementation improved meat color and helped shift muscle metabolism toward greater fat storage.

Yang Guo, the study's corresponding author, said the approach allows targeted nutrient delivery by improving how nutrients are absorbed, reducing nutrient loss and improving feed efficiency.

The research addresses challenges in sheep farming in arid regions, offering a potential way to enhance meat quality and production efficiency.

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University report that some gut bacteria can make unusually inflammatory forms of glycogen and that this microbial glycogen can trigger immune activity linked to brain inflammation in models of disease tied to the C9orf72 mutation. In patient stool samples, the team found these glycogen forms more often in ALS and C9orf72-related frontotemporal dementia than in healthy controls, and enzymatically breaking down glycogen in the gut improved outcomes in mice.

The Gambela region's agriculture bureau has given special attention to irrigated agricultural products that bolster food security in lowland areas. In the 2018/19 irrigated crop season, over 180,000 hectares were cultivated, yielding more than 5.8 million quintals for distribution, officials stated.

Scientists have developed a hybrid obesity treatment that uses GLP-1 and GIP signals to deliver a metabolic enhancer directly into cells. Early tests in mice showed greater weight loss and better blood sugar control than standard therapies. The approach aims to reduce side effects by limiting the drug's action to targeted areas.

A year-long observational study in Japan suggests that people with type 2 diabetes who tend to overeat in response to tempting food cues such as sight and smell may see greater weight loss—and possibly better blood-sugar improvement—after starting GLP-1 receptor agonists, while those with primarily emotional eating patterns show less consistent links to long-term outcomes.

Researchers at Vrije Universiteit Brussel have found that sourdough fermentation activates enzymes in wheat to break down arabinoxylans, influencing bread texture, digestibility and flavor. The study highlights how acidity drives this process more than microbes. Specific bacteria contribute to distinctive tastes like buttery aromas.
