Estudo associa fungos e parasitas a crise de saúde em cobras

Um novo estudo sobre cobras selvagens no sudeste dos Estados Unidos revelou infecções generalizadas por uma doença fúngica e parasitas pulmonares. Pesquisadores constataram que muitas cobras carregam múltiplos patógenos, com as cascavéis-pigmeias enfrentando riscos particularmente elevados.

Pesquisadores coletaram amostras de mais de 500 cobras de 29 espécies em refúgios de vida selvagem na Carolina do Sul e na Flórida, além de locais adicionais na região. O estudo, publicado na Frontiers in Veterinary Science, examinou sete patógenos e descobriu que menos de 20 por cento das cobras não apresentavam sinais de infecção. A Salmonella enterica apareceu em 63 por cento dos animais, enquanto um parasita transmitido por carrapatos foi detectado em 53 por cento.
