The first documented acoustic record of the song of the Osteocephalus omega frog was made in the municipality of Acevedo in Huila. The finding marks a scientific advance in the Andean Amazon Corridor thanks to community monitoring.

Researchers from South American institutions have identified a new spider species, Pikelinia floydmuraria, named after the band Pink Floyd and its habitat on building walls. Despite measuring just 3 to 4 millimeters, the spider hunts ants up to six times its body size and targets urban pests like mosquitoes and flies. The findings appear in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution.

Researchers have identified a 500-million-year-old fossil from Utah as Megachelicerax cousteaui, the earliest known chelicerate and relative of spiders, scorpions and horseshoe crabs. The discovery, detailed in a Nature study, extends the group's evolutionary history by 20 million years to the Cambrian period. A tiny claw uncovered during preparation confirmed its significance.

Fungi, long overlooked despite their essential contributions to soil creation, carbon sequestration, and the global economy, are receiving increased scientific and policy attention. Advocates push for their recognition on par with plants and animals amid threats like habitat loss. Efforts include conservation pledges and research initiatives highlighting their symbiotic relationships with plants.

Researchers have identified a new venomous pitviper species in the misty mountains of western Sichuan, China, previously mistaken for a common snake. Named Trimeresurus lii after the philosopher Laozi, the Huaxi Green Pitviper features distinct markings and eye colors between males and females. DNA analysis confirmed its unique evolutionary lineage in a global biodiversity hotspot.

Researchers at Dartmouth have shown that octopuses can learn to use mirrors to find food they cannot see directly. The study, published in Current Biology, marks the first time this ability has been documented in invertebrates.
